Landmannalaugar<\/strong> is one of Iceland\u2019s most remarkable Highland destinations: colourful rhyolite mountains, steaming geothermal areas, black lava and spectacular hiking trails. Reaching it in a rental 4×4 is an adventure in its own right, however, and the choice of access road makes a real difference.<\/p>\n

Quick answer:<\/strong> visit in summer when the access roads are officially open, choose a 4×4 expressly authorised by your rental company, and consider the approach from the north via F208. If you do not want to cross the rivers immediately before the campsite, use the P1 parking area<\/strong> and the pedestrian bridge.<\/p>\n

The southern section of F208 is dramatic and remote, but it involves multiple water crossings. This should not be treated as the default route for an inexperienced Highland driver. Do you have to cross a river at Landmannalaugar?<\/h2>\n

No.<\/strong> The final stretch of F224 near the Landmannalaugar hut includes river fords. The local authorities recommend that smaller 4×4 vehicles or inexperienced drivers park at P1<\/strong>, before these crossings, and walk over the pedestrian bridge to the campsite and trailheads.<\/p>\n

Do not cross simply because another vehicle has done so. Glacial rivers can rise quickly. If the conditions, your driving experience or your insurance exclusions make you uncertain, leave the vehicle at P1 or turn back.<\/p>\n

Parking reservations and visitor facilities<\/h2>\n

Landmannalaugar operates a seasonal parking booking system<\/strong> for self-drive visitors during popular summer daytime hours. The exact dates, times, charges and rules can change, so check the latest arrangements before travelling. The area has a campsite and a mountain hut. Facilities are limited compared with towns along the Ring Road, and the campsite and hut are seasonal.
