Past event \u2014 updated in November 2026.<\/strong> A total solar eclipse crossed Iceland on August 12, 2026<\/strong>, drawing attention to the country\u2019s wild western coast. The eclipse has now passed, but its route through the Westfjords, Sn\u00e6fellsnes, Reykjav\u00edk and Reykjanes provides a fascinating way to explore Iceland’s geography and plan a future road trip.<\/p>\n

According to NASA<\/a>, the path of totality crossed Iceland during the late afternoon, before continuing across the Atlantic to the Iberian Peninsula. Areas outside the narrow path experienced a partial eclipse.<\/p>\n

The Moon’s shadow moved across portions of western Iceland. The Westfjords<\/strong>, Sn\u00e6fellsnes Peninsula<\/strong>, Reykjav\u00edk area<\/strong> and Reykjanes Peninsula<\/strong> were among the regions in the path of totality.<\/p>\n

In Reykjav\u00edk, NASA lists the beginning of totality at approximately 5:48 p.m. local time<\/strong>, with the total phase lasting roughly one minute. Other locations experienced different timings and durations depending on their position within the shadow.<\/p>\n

The Westfjords<\/h3>\n

The Westfjords are among Iceland’s most striking and isolated coastal regions, with deep fjords, narrow roads, mountain passes and dramatic cliffs. Their remoteness rewards travellers who have several days rather than a rushed overnight detour.<\/p>\n

Sn\u00e6fellsnes Peninsula<\/h3>\n

The Sn\u00e6fellsnes Peninsula offers black lava fields, fishing villages, ocean cliffs and the iconic Sn\u00e6fellsj\u00f6kull glacier-volcano. You can include the peninsula in a longer western Iceland itinerary or visit it as an additional leg of a Ring Road journey.<\/p>\n

The capital and Reykjanes Peninsula were also within the eclipse’s route. For travellers landing at Keflav\u00edk, Reykjanes can be an interesting first stop, subject to any current volcanic or safety restrictions. Reykjav\u00edk offers a good starting point for exploring the country’s road network.<\/p>\n
