For a first drive down the Carretera Austral, start by looking at January and February. If hiking in Torres del Paine is the main reason for your trip, compare November with March. For a week around the lakes and Chiloé, another question may matter more: where would you enjoy spending the evening if it started raining at four?
A flight into Puerto Montt puts you within reach of the Lake District and northern Patagonia. Flying into Punta Arenas makes sense for Torres del Paine. The season affects these two trips in different ways.
Puerto Varas and the Lake District: choose with rainy days in mind
If you want outdoor lunches, pebbly lakeshores and short walks with children, February is a good place to start. At El Tepual, the weather station at Puerto Montt airport, monthly rainfall averaged 69 mm in February, 142 mm in April and 213 mm in June over 1991–2020. These local climate records from the Chilean weather service explain the seasonal difference. Even in February, you will appreciate having somewhere to dry four rain jackets.
For a week in November or March, a loop around Lake Llanquihue lets you swap days without moving camp every night. Save the clearest morning for views of the volcanoes and a cloudier day for the lakeside towns. If you fly into Puerto Montt, check the camper handover options in Puerto Varas before choosing your arrival time.
Carretera Austral: work back from the ferry dates
Chile Travel recommends December through March for Route 7. Long summer days give you more daylight to reach camp after a sailing. For a trip through the northern fjords, look up Hornopirén to Caleta Gonzalo for your travel date and direction. Check space for the vehicle with the ferry operator before booking the next night. A room or pitch on the far side is little use if the camper cannot sail that day.
Given a choice between January and March, we would take January for a first trip with a fixed return date. March would suit a shorter route where a stop could move by a day. In October or April, if Cerro Castillo or Lake General Carrera is the real draw, consider starting in Aysén instead of building the northern ferry legs into your trip. Our Carretera Austral route and ferry guide compares these starting points.
Torres del Paine: November, midsummer or March?
Day length changes more over the year around Punta Arenas than it does in the Lake District. In November the days are still getting longer, an advantage if you want a full day on foot. December and January give you long evenings to get back to camp. Strong gusts can still change a hiking plan in midsummer. Keep two possible days for the walk you would most regret missing.
In March and April a road trip around the park’s lakes gives you a chance to see the autumn colours. Their timing varies by year and location. In April, shorten the drive after your walk so you can reach your pitch in daylight. Our five-day Torres del Paine camper itinerary explains when a night near Lake Pehoé works well and when to sleep closer to the Base Torres trailhead.
May to September: plan it as a winter trip
Pases Parques lists winter opening hours from May to September for Torres del Paine and notes that conditions can change access. An open park gate tells you little about a particular mountain trail. Check that trail’s status, any guide requirement, its cut-off time and which campsite can accept the vehicle on your dates. September can still call for winter planning even as spring approaches.
For a short winter trip, we would choose one region and confirm each overnight stop. Check that the rental agreement allows your intended route, then check road conditions again close to departure. If the sleeping setup and open stops are uncertain, consider a different month before committing to flights.
A pickup camper or a rooftop tent for your month?
Imagine two wet evenings in a row. Where will you change clothes, store boots and cook? A pickup camper can give you a sheltered living area. Check the model’s layout and, if it matters for your dates, whether it has heating you can use when parked. For a rooftop tent, ask how to pack it away wet and what wind limits apply to that particular tent.
Still choosing between two months? When you compare 4×4 campers for rent in Chile, send both date windows, your group size and your preferred pickup and return towns. For Torres del Paine you can check the campers listed in Punta Arenas directly. If the number of days off is the deciding factor, use our Chile road trip itineraries by trip length.
