Planning a 10-day self-drive road trip in Namibia
A Namibia road trip in a 4×4 with a roof-top tent links the dunes of Sossusvlei, the Atlantic coast and the waterholes of Etosha. This 10-day loop from Windhoek is a first introduction to the country, with campsite stays and a route you can adapt to your pace.
It is a busy itinerary, ideally preceded by a night in Windhoek. Allow 14 to 15 days if you want more time on the coast or in Damaraland. Start by comparing 4×4 campers for hire in Namibia for your dates and group size.
Which roof-top tent 4x4 should you hire?
Before fixing the route, decide when to visit Namibia, organise your camping nights and calculate the full road trip budget.
To match the route to your available time, compare our 15-day Namibia itinerary and 3-week 4×4 road trip.
To refine your choice, explore our pages on Namibia 4×4 rentals with roof-top tents, Toyota Hilux camper rentals and arranging your Windhoek collection and return.
Compare passenger seats and sleeping capacity separately, then check the tent layout, transmission, storage and camping equipment. For two travellers, an equipped Jimny or a two-berth Hilux can be a good fit. For four people, choose a configuration explicitly listed with four berths, such as the Hilux David with two roof-top tents.
The three listings below illustrate vehicles offered through Pampa Cruz. Availability and the price for your trip must be confirmed for your dates.
Before you set off
Allow time in Windhoek for the vehicle handover, a demonstration of the tent and your first food shop. After an overnight flight, staying in town first helps you avoid combining tiredness, driving on the left and a long gravel-road journey.
At handover, ask about the four-wheel-drive system, tyre instructions, fuel, spare wheels, refrigerator and sleeping arrangements. Confirm the assistance contact details and that the roads on your planned route are permitted.
Pack warm layers for cool nights and the coast, sun protection, head torches, drinking water and supplies for each stage. Download maps before departure: mobile reception can be limited away from towns. Book the campsites that determine your route, particularly around Sesriem and Etosha.
Entry requirements depend on your nationality. British and French passport holders need a visa for a short visit under the rules introduced on 1 April 2025. Check the current requirements with the Namibian authorities; UK travellers can also consult the official Namibia entry advice.
A 10-day Namibia itinerary from Windhoek to Etosha
The loop runs through Windhoek, Sesriem and Sossusvlei, Walvis Bay, Spitzkoppe, Etosha and Okonjima before returning to Windhoek. Days 1, 3 and 5 are mainly travel days. Allow time for breaks, changing road conditions and park opening hours rather than filling every transfer day with activities.
Day 1: Windhoek to Sesriem
After a restful night in Windhoek and a full vehicle handover, head towards Sesriem, the gateway to Sossusvlei. Fill up and buy supplies before leaving town. Agree the route with your rental provider based on current conditions, then leave the afternoon for reaching your campsite and setting up before dark.
If your flight arrives that day or the handover finishes late, stay in Windhoek and shift the itinerary. An extra night is preferable to night driving just to keep to the schedule.
Day 2: Sossusvlei, Deadvlei and Sesriem Canyon
Spend the day exploring the dunes and landscapes of Sossusvlei and Deadvlei. Plan your departure around the gate times that apply to your accommodation: staying nearby does not automatically allow entry before sunrise.
The final sandy section requires a suitable vehicle, experience and permission from your rental provider. Check the current access rules and shuttle arrangements before attempting it. Carry water and adjust walks to the heat. Sesriem Canyon can complete the day if conditions and time allow. The official Sesriem Campsite information is a useful planning resource.
Day 3: Sesriem to Walvis Bay
Set aside a full travel day to reach the Atlantic coast. Gravel surfaces, stops and weather mean journeys can take longer than the distance on a map suggests. On arrival, a walk near Walvis Bay lagoon is a relaxed introduction to the coast, with birdwatching depending on conditions.
Avoid booking Sandwich Harbour for the same day as a long drive. If this excursion interests you, add a day on the coast and arrange a separate guided trip. Access to the dunes should not be improvised with your rental vehicle.
Day 4: Walvis Bay to Spitzkoppe
Leave the coast for the granite peaks of Spitzkoppe. Depending on your departure time, make a short stop in Swakopmund, then reach your campsite with enough daylight to settle in. The wide plains and huge rock formations bring a different atmosphere to this part of the trip.
Use permitted trails and viewpoints and follow local instructions. Ask about guided access where required for rock-art sites or particular routes. Reserve your pitch and stock up on water before this stage.
Day 5: Spitzkoppe to southern Etosha
This is one of the longest transfer days on the route. Travel towards Outjo and southern Etosha, stopping for fuel and supplies along the way. Choose a campsite that fits your entrance gate and realistic arrival time.
A first game drive is only practical if you arrive early enough. Gate and camp closing times take priority: do not plan a sunset drive that would bring you back after closing. If your timing is tight, a pre-booked night outside the park can make the transfer easier.
Days 6 and 7: self-drive safaris in Etosha
Keep two full days for exploring Etosha at a relaxed pace. Waterholes offer opportunities to see elephants, giraffes, zebras and antelopes, and, with luck, lions or rhinos. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed and change with the season and animal movements.
Plan drives around your booked camps, for example in the Okaukuejo, Halali or Namutoni areas. Stay on authorised roads, keep a respectful distance from animals and follow rules on leaving the vehicle. Return before your camp closes; guided game drives offered by camps are booked separately. Check NWR’s park conditions and gate guidance.
Day 8: Etosha to Okonjima
Head south to Okonjima if you have booked an overnight stay. The reserve is associated with the AfriCat Foundation’s conservation work and offers guided activities including leopard tracking.
Reserve access and activities are for staying guests, rather than day visitors dropping in en route. Check campsite or accommodation availability and activity times on the official Okonjima website. If you do not have a booking, choose another suitable stop on the way back. Encounters with big cats cannot be guaranteed.
Day 9: Okonjima to Windhoek
Return to Windhoek with a comfortable time buffer. Spending your final night near the drop-off point avoids making your flight depend on a long drive from Etosha. If time allows, enjoy a walk in town before packing.
Confirm the return time and location, fuel and cleaning requirements, and your airport transfer. Arrangements vary with the vehicle you book.
Day 10: vehicle return and departure
Allow enough time for the return inspection and the airport journey. If you have an early flight, agree a return the previous day with the rental provider. A later flight gives more flexibility, but keep the time needed for check-in.
Camping, driving and budget: what to check
A roof-top tent gives you your own sleeping space, but not permission to camp anywhere. Use campsites and authorised pitches, obtain the land manager’s agreement and follow park and private-property rules.
Drive on the left and travel in daylight, slow down on gravel and leave generous following distances. Bring your original driving licence and confirm any international permit or translation required for your licence and rental. UK drivers should check the official international driving permit guidance.
Budget for the vehicle, fuel, campsites, park fees and activities. Before booking, check insurance, excess, deposit, mileage, included equipment and any collection charges. Border crossings and restricted routes require written approval from the rental provider.
