Camping in Namibia with a 4×4: Where to Stay and How to Book

Road trip Namibie en 4x4 avec tente de toit

A roof-top tent gives you flexibility in how you organise a Namibia road trip, but overnight stops need as much thought as driving stages. Choose authorised pitches, check the facilities and secure the nights that hold your route together.

Start with the vehicle too: explore Namibia camping 4×4 rentals for the number of people who need a bed. The equipment you carry should complement the facilities at your chosen campsites.

Choose facilities as carefully as the setting

Look beyond the landscape photograph. Ask about shade, electricity, water and bathrooms, and whether facilities are private or shared. Confirm whether water is drinkable instead of assuming a tap provides drinking water.

Check access for your vehicle, reception hours and whether your expected arrival time works. The tourism board’s campsite directory offers a starting point; confirm services and availability directly with the establishment.

Sesriem: organise your Sossusvlei overnight stop

The Sesriem campsite listed by NWR is in the gateway area for Sossusvlei. It is one option to consider, while checking your accommodation’s exact location and access arrangements for the dunes.

Do not assume that every property using the name Sesriem has identical access or opening hours. Ask what your reservation allows and plan the following day accordingly. Keep the confirmation and arrive early enough for reception and setting up camp.

Etosha: separate your campsite booking from park entry

Choose your Etosha nights around the area you want to explore. Namutoni is one camp offering camping. Overnight accommodation and park entry are separate costs, as explained in NWR’s official conditions.

Gate times shape the day. Check the published Etosha opening times and the instructions given on arrival. Leave a buffer to reach camp; a final wildlife stop should not make it impossible to return within permitted hours.

A roof-top tent does not mean you can camp anywhere

Within parks, the regulations published by NWR require overnight stays in camps and fires only in designated places. Use authorised roads and follow staff instructions. Outside parks, obtain the land manager’s permission before setting up.

Keep rubbish and food secured around the vehicle. Respect other campers and local fire restrictions. Choose an overnight location in advance instead of relying on an improvised roadside stop.

Check the equipment before departure

  • Sleeping: number of tents, dimensions, mattresses and bedding.
  • Cooking: stove, fuel, fridge, crockery and utensils.
  • Camp life: table, chairs, lighting and space for bags.
  • Supplies: water storage and charging options.
  • Handover: a demonstration of opening, closing and securing the setup before driving.

Coordinate bookings in a sensible order

Sketch a realistic route, then check the vehicle and priority nights together. Avoid paying for a chain of inflexible bookings before confirming the stops that are essential to your trip.

Record each campsite’s dates, guest numbers, total price, facilities and amendment conditions. Our 10-day Namibia road trip itinerary helps place the stages. Adjust the nights to your pace rather than changing campsites every evening by default.

Frequently asked questions

Should I book every campsite ahead?

Confirm the nights that determine your itinerary. For other stops, check availability and have an alternative; an unconfirmed pitch should not be treated as secured.

Are campsites included in the 4x4 rental?

Do not assume so. Unless your proposal explicitly includes them, book and budget for campsites separately from the vehicle.

Can I drive away for an excursion with the tent open?

A tent fixed to the vehicle must be folded and secured before driving. Ask for a full demonstration during handover.
