4x4 Camper Rental in Iceland: F-Roads and Highlands
A camper for your Iceland adventure
Build an Iceland road trip around volcanic landscapes, mountain scenery and a camper that suits your route. A 4x4 camper combines a sleeping space with four-wheel drive, but access to the Highlands must be checked for each vehicle and itinerary. Start with the actual rental options, then plan the roads you can use.

Why choose a 4x4 camper?
Four-wheel drive can be useful on suitable unpaved routes, while an onboard sleeping area keeps your travel setup together. It does not remove the effects of wind, weather, rough surfaces or difficult terrain. Choose a vehicle for a specific route, rather than planning around the assumption that every mountain road will be accessible.

Who is this trip for?
Plan your walking stops with our Iceland hiking and road trip guide.
This style of trip suits travellers who want to combine the main sights with carefully planned mountain excursions. Allow time for changing conditions and alternative routes. Experience on unpaved roads is useful, but it never replaces vehicle permission or current local advice.
4x4 camper, campervan or motorhome?
Compare campervan-style travel in Iceland with 4x4 motorhome and truck camper rentals to choose the layout that fits your trip.
For a Ring Road itinerary, compare the space, driving experience and equipment you need. For a Highlands itinerary, check the individual vehicle’s permitted roads first. A truck camper can provide a comfortable sleeping setup, but its size and weight also matter on narrow or demanding roads. Read our Ring Road or Highlands: choosing your route guide before deciding.
When can you visit the Highlands?
F-road openings depend on snow, thaw and road conditions. Plan a Highlands trip around seasonal access rather than fixed opening dates, and keep a lower-altitude alternative. Our guide to the best time to visit Iceland helps you compare seasons; current road information must still guide each day’s driving.
F-roads: plan the route before booking
Use designated campsites and check local restrictions. Do not assume that a camper allows you to stay overnight wherever you park. Driving away from roads and permitted tracks is prohibited. A 4x4 badge is not permission to use every F-road: suitability depends on the exact vehicle, the rental agreement and current road conditions.
Before entering the Highlands, confirm the proposed route with the rental provider and check current closures. River crossings require a separate assessment; do not treat them as a routine part of a camper trip or assume that damage is insured. Choose an alternative route whenever conditions or permission are unclear.
Use the Iceland F-roads and Highlands guide to understand the main planning questions. If Landmannalaugar is on your list, review how to get to Landmannalaugar and confirm the chosen approach with your rental provider.
Compare the Iceland campers
The Iceland catalogue currently lists two Toyota Hilux truck campers: Erla, with four sleeping places, and Jón, with two sleeping places. Both listings show five belted seats. Check availability for your dates, the sleeping layout and the rental conditions before booking.
